🕊️ Right Livelihood in Business: Why the Way You Care for Employees Matters More Than Ever

By Dr. Dana Mincer | Love Health DPC

There’s a concept in Buddhism called Right Livelihood—the idea that the work we do should cause no harm and instead contribute to the well-being of others.

At Love Health, this principle guides everything we do. As a physician, a business owner, and someone who grew up in a small family business, I believe that how we care for people—our patients, our employees, and our communities—matters deeply. That belief is at the heart of Direct Primary Care (DPC), and it’s why I’m writing this.

Because right now, our healthcare system is in trouble—and business owners like you have more power to fix it than you may realize.

🏥 Primary Care Is in Crisis—But You Can Be Part of the Solution

Earlier this year, Dr. Jason Goldman, President of the American College of Physicians, issued a sobering warning: primary care is on the verge of collapse.

Physicians are burned out and leaving the profession in record numbers. Many patients wait weeks for appointments, only to be rushed through a 7-minute visit. The system is strained—and yet, employers are still paying more every year for health plans that often deliver less access and more frustration.

But here’s the part most people don’t talk about: there’s another way.

đź’ˇ What Is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

Direct Primary Care is a healthcare model that removes the insurance middlemen and puts the focus back where it belongs—on the relationship between doctor and patient.

Instead of billing insurance for every visit or service, DPC operates on a flat, affordable monthly fee. This gives your employees unlimited access to their doctor, without copays, deductibles, or surprise bills.

With DPC, your employees receive:

  • Same- or next-day appointments with a doctor who truly knows them

  • Direct text, phone, and video access to their physician

  • Ongoing support for chronic conditions, prevention, mental health, and lifestyle change

  • Fewer ER visits, specialist referrals, and unnecessary imaging

  • A more compassionate, accessible, and human-centered healthcare experience

đź’¬ Ask Your Broker the Questions No One Is Asking

We often hear: “But we already have a broker…”
That’s great—we’re not here to replace them. In fact, we’re happy to work with them.

But we do encourage you to ask a few thoughtful questions:

  • “If we’re not paying you directly, how are you compensated?”

  • “Is your commission tied to the plans we choose?”

  • “Can you show us a breakdown of what things like MRIs, labs, or specialist visits actually cost under our current plan?”

In many cases, brokers are paid by the insurance carriers—via commissions from the plans they recommend. And if their compensation increases when your healthcare spend goes up, it’s fair to ask: How incentivized are they to bring costs down?

To be clear, this isn’t about blaming brokers. This system was created decades ago, and it worked for a while. But today, it’s outdated—and often doesn’t reflect the transparency and control employers need in order to make the best choices for their teams.

⚖️ Fiduciary Duty: What Employers Need to Know

Under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, employers have a fiduciary responsibility when offering health benefits. That means you’re legally required to act in the best interest of your employees—especially when it comes to plan costs and fairness.

If one of your employees is charged $3,000 for an MRI that actually costs $450 (a real example I’ve personally seen), and your broker can’t provide the contract details that justify that price, you could be held liable for breaching that responsibility.

This isn’t a scare tactic—it’s a call for awareness. Johnson & Johnson has already faced lawsuits for this, and others are underway. As an employer, you deserve full transparency—and your employees deserve fair pricing.

đź’Ľ Why We Offer Free Consultations

I grew up watching my parents run a small family business. They worked hard, they cared deeply about their employees, and they made the best decisions they could with the information they had.

Now in their 70s, they often tell me:
“We wish we had known about options like DPC before we sold our business. It would have made a real difference.”

That’s why, at Love Health, we offer free consultations to employers. There’s no cost, no pressure, no sales pitch—just honest, practical guidance to help you understand your options.

We believe you’re entitled to that knowledge. And we’re here to help you use it.

🌱 This Is Our Right Livelihood Commitment

For us, DPC isn’t just a business model—it’s a form of Right Livelihood.

  • It gives employees meaningful access to care that improves their health and well-being.

  • It supports physicians in doing the work they were trained to do, without burnout or moral injury.

  • It helps businesses save money and reinvest in growth, jobs, and community impact.

It’s the rare kind of solution that works for everyone.

At Love Health, our commitment is to leave the world better than we found it—one employer, one family, one patient at a time.

📩 Want to see what DPC could look like for your team? Let’s talk. There’s no cost, no catch—just clarity, care, and the opportunity to build something better together.
